Tahan Lin is the founder/CEO of Backer-Founder and a mid-core game addict who loves almost all game genres, excluding fighting and shooting. Backer-Founder is Taiwan’s first crowdfunding consultant company, offering strategic planning, content creation, and promotion services for crowdfunding projects, for both domestic and overseas, while also developing assisting tools including independent crowdfunding solution Backme, and analysis solution Crowdtrial. The team has been established for 2.5 years and has been involved in over 100 crowdfunding projects for different fields, including technology, creativitiy, social issues, and public welfare. The amount of funds raised across all projects has exceeded NTD 600 million, averaging nearly NTD 5 million for each project, a whopping 15 times the average amount for other similar projects in Taiwan.


Factors Leading to Successes and Failures in Game Crowdfunding

Crowdfunding has become an increasingly common phenomenon in the game industry. Besides the already matured board-game market, electronic games including Star Citizen and the Shenmue series have also achieved huge milestones through crowdfunding projects started by renowned developers or teams. However, Taiwan’s game crowdfunding situation is still developing slowly compared to the thriving overseas crowdfunding scene, and several controversial occurences have also caused a few problems. During this talk, Lin will start by discussing iconic successful and controversial examples, then go on to introduce the crowdfunding tools and platforms used in the game industry and analyze the possible reasons for successes and failures in game crowdfunding. He will also discuss the potential for future development in Taiwan’s game industry.
